Explosions as Russia launches 15th airstrike in Kiev in May | Russia-Ukraine War News

The overnight missile attack comes a day after Russia launched its largest-ever drone strike on the Ukrainian capital.

It was the 15th Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian capital Kiev this month and the second consecutive night of multiple bombings.

“A missile was shot down near Kyiv,” Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said on the Telegram news channel early Monday. “Air defense work!”

Explosions were heard in several districts of the city, including in Kyiv’s historic Bodil district, where falling debris damaged roofs.

According to preliminary reports from the mayor and the city’s military administration, no casualties were reported in the overnight attack.

Monday’s attack, which appears to have been a combination of missiles and drones, followed a massive drone strike in Kyiv the night before that killed one person and wounded several others.

The city’s air defense forces shot down 40 drones in and around the capital in the early hours of Sunday morning, officials said.

The Kyiv Independent news website reported that most of the drones were Iranian-made Shahed roving munitions.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the country’s air defense forces for protecting the country and asked its parliament to impose sanctions against Iran for supplying Russia with weapons, including Shahed drones.

Waves of Russian attacks against Ukraine are now coming several times a week.

The full extent of Monday’s attack was not immediately known.

Reuters news agency reported several loud explosions early Monday morning as the city and the rest of Ukraine were under an airstrike alert.

A long-promised Ukrainian counteroffensive to recapture territory seized by Russia since it launched its full-scale invasion 15 months ago, Moscow has intensified its attacks targeting military infrastructure and supplies.

While Ukraine has never publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks inside Russia, a series of raids inside the country have targeted military, energy and transport infrastructure, with Moscow blaming Kiev for the attacks.
