Heat wave forecast for 10 cities due to dangerously hot weather on East Coast

Heat advisories are in effect for a large area — including Boston, New York, Richmond and Raleigh, NC — for slightly less extreme heat and humidity.

Warmer weather is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, with triple-digit highs possible from South Carolina to Maryland. During the hottest time of the year this temperature is about 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

National Weather Service describes it “Extremely dangerous and deadly heat.”

Nighttime temperatures will be much warmer than normal, only dropping to 80 degrees in some areas, providing little relief.

The The weather service’s heat danger level of 0 to 4 is forecast to reach Levels 3 and 4 in many areas along the East Coast through Wednesday. And records will be plentiful, with some places setting them up over several days – both daytime highs and warm nights.

It hit a record high of 101 on Sunday, the most days with triple-digit highs. Plan for only afternoon storms amid heat indexes of 105 or 110 and steamy conditions through at least Tuesday.

BALTIMORE – Heat warning, high 102

Plenty of sunshine, mixed with puffy midday and afternoon clouds, and a slight chance of storms. Heat indexes of 110 or higher are possible both Monday and Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA – Heat warning, high 100

Hot, humid and hazy conditions reign. Heat indexes will climb to 105 or higher on Monday and Tuesday, with overnight highs not far above 80. An air quality alert is also in effect. Cold front storms strong Wednesday.

NEW YORK CITY – Heat advisory, high of 96

A few showers early Monday will do nothing to cool the heat and increase humidity. Heat indexes will be around 100 on Monday and Wednesday, and will climb near 105 on Tuesday. Storms are most likely late Wednesday.

BOSTON – Heat advisory, high of 94

Lots of sun Monday and Tuesday will send temperatures into the mid-90s, even near the water. Showers and storms will increase late Wednesday.

Charlotte – No alerts, high 99

Heat indexes between 100 and 105 will be mostly sunny and accompanied by a few isolated afternoon or evening storms.

Charleston, SC — Heat warning, high 98

A combination of extreme humidity and extremely high temperatures pushes Charleston and the surrounding coastal areas to the limit. The heat index can approach 115.

  • Wednesday: 95 high / 79 low

Roanoke, Va. – No alerts, 100 max

Sunny, warm conditions rule. A little less humidity than places further east will help keep the heat index in check, but 100 will be hot whether it’s a dry heat or not.

  • Wednesday: 96 high / 75 low

Raleigh, NC – Heat advisory, high 101

The city has already set a record this month when it reached 106 on July 5. It hasn’t been that hot this week, but their numbers will suffer if the heat index exceeds 105 for several days.

  • Wednesday: 95 high / 77 low

Hartford, Conn. – Heat advisory, max 95

Hartford has already seen 17 days, reaching at least 90 so far this year, the second place on record to date. There’s more on the table this week. Heat indices are hovering around 100.
