The Kansas City Chiefs and five-time Pro-Bowl defensive end Chris Jones have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with $95 million guaranteed, his agents told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday night.
The specifics of the deal are still being finalized, but Jones will sign a five-year contract in which all money — $95 million — is guaranteed in the first three years. Once the contract is signed, Jones will earn the highest average annual salary for a defensive tackle.
Jones' guaranteed $95 million would be the fourth-most guaranteed money by a defensive player in his current contract, according to Roster Management System. Rounding out the top three are Nick Bosa ($119.9M), Joey Bosa ($102M) and Myles Garrett ($102M).
The move allows Kansas City to keep its top guard before free agency begins.
Jones, 29, has been in talks with the Chiefs for months and sat out all of training camp last year and missed the first game of the regular season against the Lions.
He came back on an amended 1-year deal, totaled 10.5 sacks on the season, was named first-team All-Pro, won his third Super Bowl, and is now the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Despite speculation surrounding the trio, Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and Jones are now back in Kansas City as the Chiefs look to become the first NFL team in history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Jones' 2023 season saw Jones missing the starter for an upgraded contract. He returned in time for Week 2 and finished the season with 10.5 sacks, the third-highest total of his career.
Jones had a 19.6% passing success rate, second best among interior linemen.
Jones, a second-round draft pick of the Chiefs out of Mississippi State in 2016, had 15.5 sacks in 2018.
Jones has just 2.5 sacks in 19 career playoff games. But he still managed to make an impact in a few games. He knocked down three passes in the Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV win over the San Francisco 49ers, and had six touchdowns when the Chiefs beat the 49ers again in Super Bowl LVII.
