Georgia Tech closed out the college football season with a win over 10th-ranked FSU

College football is back.

Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr hit a game-winning field goal to lead the Yellow Jackets over the 10th-ranked Florida State Seminoles 24-21 in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday.

Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei led a 15-play, 84-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions to tie the game at 21. That was the last time Florida State would have the ball.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King burned 6:33 of the game clock on 12 plays and gave his kicker a chance to win.

Birr missed from 52 yards out on the first possession of the second half, but he nailed the game-winner from 41 yards out, sneaking it inside the left goalpost.

Florida State moved the ball easily on its opening drive and Gates came out hot. Lawrence Tofili scored his first touchdown of the 2024 season on a 28-yard run. The Seminoles executed a trick play on the extra point to secure the two-point conversion, giving them an 8-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets were quick to score themselves. Backup quarterback Zach Byron backed up King on offense at the opposing one-yard line, and the QB barreled into the end zone for a touchdown on the draw.

King was steady all day for the Yellow Jackets and did it with his arm and legs. He finished the day 11-of-16 for 146 yards while rushing the ball 15 times for 54 yards.

Georgia Tech running back Jamaal Haynes rushed the ball 11 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

It was FSU’s first loss to a double-digit favorite since 2021.

It marked the second straight loss for the Seminoles after being crushed 63-3 by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl, missing the College Football Playoff despite a 13-0 record at the time.

The Seminoles should look to right the ship on Sept. 2 at home against Boston College.

Georgia Tech will look to build off of a losing streak at home on August 31 against the Georgia State Panthers.
