, Google has unveiled its latest product for the living room. It replaces the Chromecast and is a standalone set-top box as opposed to the dongles we’re used to. The tiny wedge-shaped duo supports all the expected features, including HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio. But Google is also making the device’s smart home bona fides in a big way with support for Matter and Thread. You also get a popover Google Home panel that lets you transform your smart home from the comfort of your TV.
Of course, considering how many smart TVs there are, you might wonder why Google would push this product out. Or the ubiquity of other platforms that do the same job, from Roku to streaming-friendly cable boxes. On the one hand, Google wants to keep a grip on the biggest screen in your home, and on the other, it’s a great way to advertise the search giant’s AI prowess, offering custom recommendations for things to watch. Plus, if you’re looking for something a little more made by Google, you can get it for $100 when it launches in September.
As for Chromecast, we’re keeping it as a dirt-cheap little streaming stick.
