Will Coppola pay for “Megalopolis” marketing?

American zootrope

Earlier this week Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 million fashion project “Megalopolis” finally secured a US distribution deal with Lionsgate to release the film in theaters this fall.

The film premiered in Los Angeles ahead of its Cannes premiere, and then an American studio was ready for a wide theatrical release — and the associated costs of millions.

Lionsgate probably took it because they didn’t need to put their money where their mouth was. THR Reportedly, Mini Major will not pay for the film’s marketing.

Instead, sources in the trade indicate that Coppola still has $15-20 million to spend on a release of this size — but the exact number is unknown at this point.

The film will also be screened on some IMAX screens as part of its marketing. The film’s Cannes premiere received mixed reviews from critics, but garnered more attention than the other films.

“Megalopolis” will be released in US theaters on September 27.
